Great picture of Linacre School - hasn't changed. I attended there from 1939-1945. Headmistress at that time was Miss McPherson. Does anyone remember her?

Also attended from 1945 until 1951, the school celebrated its centeanary in 2005. The school had open evenings for former pupils too visit. The children were dressed in Edwardian costume, they had salvaged some of the old cast iron, legged, double seat desks. It brought it all back, many school photos were available, the most intriguing items the school entrance record book of every child who ever attended, with address details, parent details occupations all in coperplate script. Also the punishment record, would you believe they were still caning the girls up till the 1960s. The school caretaker is very enthusiastic about the school history and if you contact him he will let you view the records and allow copy of entries to be made.

Dave,

How do I get in touch with the caretaker?

I was there 45-51 and my dad was there about 1910-1915, possibly one of his sisters too.

Hi Glenys

I was previously in contact regarding Norma Baker, I realised later the house numbers on Knowsley Road I mistook Stella's for yours sorry about the mistake. Anyway the caretaker details you are after, I have not got at hand but will obtain and pass on to you when available. I have made contact with Margaret Willee, to confirm I was in the same class as her, she directed me to the school photos I am on 1947 @No1, 1948@No4 I believe you are also on one of these photos. After a lot of memory bank bank delving I do remember you and John Birchall I recall you had blonde hair.

Kind regards

I have been in touch with the school regarding acess to old records etc, unforunately the scool caretaker (Tom Gilespie) who looks after the records has been hospitalised and won't be back for short while. However my telephone details will be kept for him to make contact on his return, from then I will further update. Should I forget the school office tel, is 0151 9221466. A book has been put together of all the former pupils who sent in their personal memories for the centenary year event, which is on display at the school

I'm off for two weeks starting tomorrow but when I get back I'd like to know more about the records they've got at Linacre. My dad was there in the 1920s - I've actually got his leaving report, and so was my mam Jean Allison - she lived in Roby Street and my aunty Bett her sister, went there too, as well as the other five brothers. If it opened in 1905 then even my grandad might have qualified at least for the elementary school. I can hardly wait.

Ken
Roberts, Allison are the Bootle names I'm interested in.

Thorp(e), Ballard, Parry, Lucas, Dodd, Jacobson, are Liverpool ancestors.

Hi to Dave Owen, was the headmaster called Mr Spencer when you were there?,I must have been there the same time as you & Glenis 45/50.
tell me did you go to St Matthews social club, more specificly the AINSDALE Sands nights out.if so I might remember you,I was in [exscuse spelling] I think it was Miss LYSHART's class,as I recall she moved to the Lakes to get married.Put me out of my misery by telling me I'm right.

Hi Steuart

Correct on the headmaster, his wife died and we were informed about it, a few years later he married the headmistress from the infants, Miss Barnard. His father had the coal merchants at the back of Irwin's the grocers, corner of Thornton Road.

If you go to the 'Talk about history of Bootle' blog @page 5, 'Photos of Linacre School', I am on the 1947 pic @No 1 and 1948 pic @No4, both Glenys and Margaret are on same photos. The teacher on the photo is a Miss Collison. Miss Brew got married and she then became Mrs Lyshart! she did leave but it was after she married.

Did you mean St Matthews youth club? if so yes, also the Stanley Social and the Gas Works Social Club it had a 6 penny dance on a Friday, we all learnt to bop in there. The crowd I socialised with lived on and around the Thornton Road area. Regarding the Ainsdale Sands club only a few times, mostley Litherland Town Hall, St Lukes, the OPB and the rest of the dance halls.

I was a sea going engineer, after I completed my aprenticeship at English Electric, I missed alot of the 60s club scene except when home on leave.

Hi Frank

I think you may be referring to Eric Olsen, he was at Linacre (1943-49) he is Ron's brother(1945-51), also Carl he is 77, sister Lilian and David (1949-55) they did live in Thornton Road. Eric now lives in Litherland he was a buyer for Littlewoods, see them all regularly.

Incidentally if you were a class mate of Eric you should also recall Wilfred Corrigan, he lived in Balfour Road now lives in California he is in the 'Sunday Times' 2007 rich list No.450 he is estimated at being worth £158 million! I remember we helped him once when he fell off and got jammed under the 'jerker' in the North Park, I think he might be grateful after all this time!

Hi Dave sorry but tis I again Steuart, you have set trains of thought rolling again. Regards to the OLSEN family of Thornton Road,[a] did some of them live near to Roby or May Street [opposite there] & did they live next door to the CARNEY family. My interest in them is because during an ancestor search I found out we have a connection with an OLSEN family from way back, some lived in Crosby & some may have been in Queens Drive, & recently there have been at least two bereavments in the family's.As you see one or more on occasion could I ask you PLEASE,one more wee favour, ask them if they have ANY connection with a family called McRAE.
If all answers happened to be yes & any of them are on line please feel free to direct them directly to me.
Thank you for your time I'll buy a pint in your name next time I have one .
Steuart.

Hi Steuart

I have spoken with Ron Olsen, sorry to inform its a different Olsen clan. Ron did live close to May Street next to the prefab corner of Melling Road. There was a Carney family who lived close to July Street, on same side as Wilson's Dairy, a Marie Carney from Thornton Road is/was chair of governor's Linacre School at the centenary event 2005.

I would like that pint (prefarably red wine)!
