I can definitely say without fear of contradiction that they did not get their hair cut at Jimmy Connollys on Irlam Road. JJC.
Was he the one who cut hair in his back yard for a tanner a time John?

Yes, the one and only, charged thruppence for kids, backyard in the summer kitchen in the winter, nothing interrupted his wife from having the meals on the go on the stove, JJC.

John this is REAL Bootle history; the kind that makes us smile, evokes personal memories and you rarely find in books.
The barber's chair (or plank across the chair) is almost a rite of passage for lads of a certain age around Marsh Lane, Knowsley, Peel and Derby Roads.

First stop Jimmy Connolly's back yard for a threepenny alloff
Next stage was Tommy Mac's next to Jones' seed shop on Peel Rd for a semi crew with a square neck.
Dennis' Stanley Rd for the L.B.A. mod look
and finally back to Peel Rd and Mick the barber.
And no I'm not a fella in drag; I just grew up with 6 brothers :(

Fancy a challenge?

On Grand National Day (3 April) 1982, me and my old mate Tony did a sponsored pool marathon in The Georges pub on Marsh lane.

Bootle Times did a small piece in the next edition including a photo.

Next time you're delving into their archives - any chance you can try and find that for me please?

Bern
I'm going to have a look at the April 7 1982 edition again. Only made a note of the date, because I thought It would be easy to spot the article.

I was wrong. So The George , sponsored pool marathon, it is.

The next edition is the 15th, but its at the start of another reel and it is of abysmal quality. Difficult to identify anything on it.

Interesting piece in "Charles Bedford's Schooldays" where amongst other things he recalls his father's wireless.

This is probably the "Amplion Seven" mentioned..(!!)

Thanks once again Dan love this and would never have found it myself, I doubt there is much else written describing Bootle back then, brilliant to read a first hand account of Marsh Lane being open countryside :D

Cheers Tony.
I've been oscillating between the 30s/ 40s and the 90s on the last few visits to the libraries.
You can see the beginnings of change in the town's demography in that earlier period.

I'd forgotten the Bootle Times became a free paper, incorporating Mersey Mart, at the start of 1992 (20p if bought).
That was the beginning of the end for local journalism.
