The Bootle Times of 1923 occasionally published snippets from the 30 year's previous edition of 1897.

The borough needed brickies to move from Liverpool to build the subway.

Searched Gore's, Kelly's and the OS maps but I haven't found Appleton House.

Bob, could be wrong but i have got that down as Brewster Street and for some reason i seem to remember the building on the left (just before Bedford Road) as having something to do with Danish bacon or am i just imagining that? JJC.

It was the Danish Bacon company on the corner, John, my brother used to work there. It's now an undertakers.

Released in 1975. Looks like the choir was based in the Methodist Mission on Linacre Road.

Linacre Lane 1968.

The young lad getting a light should be eligible to start drawing his state pension this year, along with his mate in short trousers.

On the left, I'm guessing Ben Sherman, a pair of Flemings and possibly Doc Martens.

Hey Dan

Fancy a challenge?

On Grand National Day (3 April) 1982, me and my old mate Tony did a sponsored pool marathon in The Georges pub on Marsh lane.

Bootle Times did a small piece in the next edition including a photo.

Next time you're delving into their archives - any chance you can try and find that for me please?

Storm Bertha, or whatever stupid name they've come up with, permitting; I'll probably go to the library tomorrow.

So, if successful, I should be posting this time tomorrow.

Don't think that they are Doc Martens, look more like the cheaper Curtess ripoff equivalent of Saxones Comos, (looks like steel tips fitted to the heels) and it looks like the fella with the ciggy in his mouth has well had his moneys worth out of his Everprest keks. JJC

I'm with you John, deffo Comos (or rip-offs), didn't you have to put stick on soles on them as the stitching went right through to the outer sole? Dig the one inch turnup on the jeans :D
Other big lad's kex could be from his shiny tonic mohair suit.
Wonder if they got their hair cut at Dennis' on Stanley Rd near Commercial Rd.
Lovely pic.

I can definitely say without fear of contradiction that they did not get their hair cut at Jimmy Connollys on Irlam Road. JJC.

Was he the one who cut hair in his back yard for a tanner a time John?

I wonder what that is all about on the side of the shop (Thornton Road) looks like a girl/woman in stocks, can't recall advertising that low down on the gable end, advertising hoardings were always higher up the wall. JJC
