Dot, that pic looks to have been taken from inside Bowerdale Park which is opposite the section of Seaforth Rd with Lime Grove, Hawarden Grove and Seaforth Vale running off it. I’m pretty sure that most of the properties pictured have now been rebuilt.

Was that Conway St and Beaumaris St meeting to the right? I remember an old lady used to run a small shop where the two roads met.The shop next to Scott’s was a newsagents and comic shop, know locally as Tony’s in the late 50’s early 60’s.

Walton Vale Picture House I remember going there think it closed in 1958/9 ish.

I distinctly remember seeing '' The Jolson Story '' here.
Starring Larry Parks ? [ but the voice of Al Jolson ]
Must have been with my parents.
His voice obviously made a lasting impression on me .
The film is probably only seen via YouTube these days as it is considered '' controversial '' in these woke times.
Sad really.

Half of Johnsons is now gone.

So do I gather from the directory that there wasn’t/isn’t a Halfway in Bootle?

Arthur’s was born 1884 and lived in Twiss Street in 1901 - thats the best I have at present.

Yes that’s him at The Langton - what year is the Directory?

Is the photo the Langton?

All my information stems from a conversation with one of Arthur’s daughters, my grandmother, 20 years ago, so it’s a little shakey, and it may be that he went to the Langton for some time, he definitely ended up in the Halfway in Woolton in the 40’s, we have photos and my Mum remembers going there.

so i cant trace Simpson where he was working as a barman
or where he lived

I’m beginning to wonder if the snaps I have are of The Globe in Birkenhead where I Know he was prior to Bootle. The shapes of the doors and Windows don’t appear to match TheLangton.

Another query - in 1911, the family are in 1 Falconer STreet, Bootle - I cant see that the OS 6” maps for the period.

Great pictures Bob, I imagine many people nowadays may wonder what the 2 ladies who are down on their
knees in Macawber Street, and dont know what they are doing. I remember my mother kneeling down, washing
the doorstep and front paving flags with hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush, and then applying some
colour with a Donkeystone. Fond memories. Ray.

This one is even better. Rice Lane railway station is a railway station in Liverpool, England, located to the north of the city centre in the Walton district. It is on the Kirkby branch of the Merseyrail network’s Northern Line.

The station was opened on 20 November 1848, and was known as Preston Road until 14 May 1984. It is located just to the north of Walton Junction, where the Kirkby and Ormskirk branches of the Northern line diverge; Walton (Merseyside) station on the Ormskirk line is close by (5 minutes away on foot along Hornby Road).

Love the photo of the Diamond Matchworks circa 1932. It wasn't quite like that when I was growing up in Bowden st in the 1940's. The matchworks was gone, bombed out, most of webster rd at the top of Bowden street was gone thanks to a stick of bombs that were meant for the railway line but fell short. The last house in our street was gone. strange thing about the bombs the blast damaged the rooves of some of the houses half way down the street. They then built pre fabs on all the empty blocks and they were still there when I left in 1960.

The hulk of the EMPRESS OF CANADA, a mass of blackened and rusty steel, left Liverpool on 1st September 1954 under the tow of the 836-ton ocean-going tug ZWARTE ZEE.

Commanded by 61-year old Captain Thomas Vet. Watching her leave the Mersey was Commandant Enrico Accame, who had paid £130,000 for the hulk, and was said to have paid another £12,000 for the 2,200 mile tow to La Spezia.

The salvage operation had cost the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board £466,000, plus the loss of deep-sea berth for eighteen months. The Board sold the Empress's propellers separately for about £8,000.
