My Grandad, Harold Bevan, back row far left. The picture says Wesley Hall AFC. It must have been Wesley Hall in Bootle,he lived in Clydesdale, 2 Breeze Hill. I wonder if anyone can recognise anyone else, I doubt it as it's such a long time ago.
Would be interesting to know were Wesley hall was in Bootle maybe Bobhamo will have something on this

This is not a typical Bootle JOC post but as it relates to football, an existing member of the site and an ex JOC goalie, I thought it might be of interest.

I am often still asked what was my greatest save during my football career and the attached Certificate shows what it was almost fifty years ago, 8th April, 1969, I was in the early stages of my pro refereeing career officiating in an amateur match in Audenshaw..

One of the goalies dived and struck his head on the goalpost and became unconscious and stopped breathing. All the team had was their typical football First Aid kit of Iodine, rubbing lotion, bandages, sticking plaster and a few oranges. Just like Orrel Pleasure on a Saturday afternoon..

The youth was dying and I was the only one with First Aid training.

I administered mouth to mouth and after a while he started breathing shallowly. He was taken away by ambulance and the game went on. He eventually made a full recovery.

The incident drew national newspaper headlines as no referee had ever saved the life of a player before.

Then about 20 years old, Alan Wray, must be around 70 now and, except for some media photos, I have never seen him since

It was my greatest save.

In April 1969, 50 years ago this year our team Christ Church FC won the Liverpool Cup in a final played at the old Bootle Stadium.
I'm trying to get the remaining 12 members of the team together, as near as I can to that date.
Sad that I am I still have the medal that was presented that day. see attached

The team won the Liverpool Cup in May 1969 at Bootle Stadium, referee Jack (or John) Crilly. Losing finalists I think was St Gerard’s or maybe St Mary’s.

One of the top teams in the J.O.C. winning the league many times, also major trophies
The late "Chick" Heath seated 1st left on the front row was the youngest player to play for Everton (15yrs of age) the match was against Stoke City, May 20th 1945, Everton won 3-2 and finished runners-up in the wartime league.

Chick was also a youth International 1946/47 for the N.A.B.C. he was chosen from Litherland Boys Club, he won two caps for England. In December 1946 and January, April 1947 he played for Liverpool County Football Association.

Seated also on the front row is "Chicks" two brothers, Jake Heath (4th from left) and the late Eddie Heath at the end. Johnny Driscoll (standing at the end of the second row) was the Trainer. Bill Charlton (center of row) the Goalkeeper.

016 think this was Bootle Athletic FC. Lancashire Combination 2nd Division Champions 1948-9

Bootle AFC was formed in 1879 they played in the original Merseyside derby in October 1880 against Everton the applied to be founder members of the football league but were turned down. Bootle AFC had their most successful season in 1881 being runners up in the Football Alliance and getting through to the FA Cup quarter-finals before losing 7 - 0 to Blackburn Rovers. They played at Hawthorn Road.
