I heard this theory about the Mersey a few years ago but I didn't know the source.
HSLC Vol 2 1849
There was no Mersey or Liverpool Bay up until 7000 years ago, and no Irish Sea 8000 years ago.

The maps are from the Historic Society of Lancashire & Cheshire archives.
They take a little while to load, but there's lots of interesting stuff in them.
First volume is 1848 to 1849.
The maps are a bit iffy. I was heading out for Chester yesterday and I ended up in Southport.
Nice coffee cake and coffee in the Lord Street shopping arcade though.

Bigger version of Lord Burghley's Map showing: West Derby Hundred, Salford Hundred, Blackburn Hundred, Amounderness Hundred and the Lonsdale Hundred.
The Mersey would be at the top of the map.
The Arnold Reanes in the second map is referred to as Arnot Raynes in the History of Netherton, and if I remember correctly, this was the coach road from Liverpool to Ormskirk which became Dunningsbridge Road.
The history was drawn up by a local historian working at Crosby Library and it used to be available from the local council libraries..

The motto is a quote from Virgil's Eclogue, in which Tityrus describes Octavianus as a god, in the line Deus nobis haec otia fecit.
It has been variously translated as :
These comforts, friend, were by a god bestowed.
These blessings, friend, a deity bestowed.
God has given us these things in tranquility.
God has given us this ease.
The man to whom I owe this happy leisure is a god.
