77th (Bootle) Battalion, Home Guard.

Home Guard Training c1940 somewhere in the Bootle Docks complex?
Philip Fenerty of St Matthew's Avenue, Litherland is in the foreground - right.
Philip Fenerty was involved in a lorry crash in about 1930 and badly damaged the bones in his left arm. Unfit for military service during the war, he joined the Home Guard. Philip's father, Joseph Fenerty was a well known Bootle athlete in his day.

Rivermersey, Johnson’s entrance wasn’t that long or wide, you could just about get a wagon in there. Also the boiler room would’ve been in on the left of the photo.

Cinderpath puts me in mind of fun fairs once held there during freezing cold winter months, happy days!
Trying to figure out where the neatly landscaped Stanley Gardens where situated,, looks like they could be close to the Merton!!

Shelagh, Stanley Gardens was Kings Gardens, I lived in Exeter Road almost opposite to them. I think it was called Stanley Gardens at first.

Thanks for reminding of that restaurant John, I only went in there a couple of times, and when I asked some people if they knew the name of it, some said I was dreaming as they’ve never heard of it. I thought I was imagining it. The arguments I’ve had over the years about it is unbelievable, now I can sleep in peace.

Thanks Loretta, I should have known, but think it was surrounding buildings that threw me, didn't know there was a church so close to it.. in fact can't remember that church at all!
(just wondered how long the church had been there)

joe looking at the photo of the police box , i remember on the wall by the solly, was a small box which flashed when they wanted to get in touch with the bobby on the lane . remember the e.w.s. on irlam road the bench all old men used to sit on the toilet a few yards on, then the telephone box cant remember the police box must be old age joe21

Hi Shelagh the church was Emmanuel Congregationalist .built in 1876.I used to be a sunday school teacher there until during
a big family fight I found out that I was actually Jewish.It burned down in the very early 60's and myself along with two of my mates
were accused of arson.The vicar hated young people.I was in Singapore on a destroyer when it was set ablaze but neither my mates
or I ever got any kind of apology from the police or the vicar for the false accusation

My goodness..I'm shocked.. what an eventful young life you have had...from Sunday School Teacher to serving on a destroyer in Singapore..with a few memorable events in between - discoveries of identity, a lot for a young person to accept..then accusations of arson by youth hating vicars, tut tut!
If I see that fella I'll give him a piece of my mind
All that stress going on, not surprised you moved to Canada!
Thanks for letting me know about the church "Emmanuel Congregationalist" gives me a better perspective of road layout!
No shortage of churches around at that time, especially in this area.. must have been a wealthy place to live during the 1800s early 1900s!

Bob, interesting information on the Kings Gardens. I did not know what it was before. I often used to play there, however I must admit I did not recognise it with all that lovely landscaping. I do not remember it ever being as lovely when I was a kid as it is in the picture.
