Not Bootle, but I think you'll like this photo of the Overhead Railway, in colour.

the occasion when they elected a 'Children's Mayor' the Bootle Mayor at the time was Alderman Joe 'Sam' Kelly and his wife Margaret.
The picture was during his term of office 1959-60, he sadly died the next year. His wife 'Peggy' was the cashier at Balliol Road Baths.

Thanks for photos Nicolas and Joe, particularly liked the photo of Lord Mayor Joe Kelly..
Brought back memories of "The Lord Mayors Ball" held at the Palace, Marsh Lane Bootle, 1960.
Can remember Joe Kelly delivering a bit of a light hearted speech to all the twelve year olds in attendance, he came across as a lovely jovial man!
Sad to learn he'd passed on so soon afterwards,, thanks for extra info Bob!!

77th (Bootle) Battalion, Home Guard.
Home Guard Training c1940 somewhere in the Bootle Docks complex?
Philip Fenerty of St Matthew's Avenue, Litherland is in the foreground - right.
Philip Fenerty was involved in a lorry crash in about 1930 and badly damaged the bones in his left arm. Unfit for military service during the war, he joined the Home Guard. Philip's father, Joseph Fenerty was a well known Bootle athlete in his day.

Great photos everyone, Mitchell's Cake shop - often got sent there by cookery teacher to buy tubs of fresh cream for our delicious flans and cakes!
Home guard, all young men it seems, not a bit like dads army
The old photo of May Day girl, lovely!
Picture of Morris dancers practicing, one way of keeping them fit!
Wedding picture good for 1941, all well kitted out, must have been saving clothing coupons for ages!
The old dog in the last one made me laugh, (hadn't noticed it before) all the kids in the neighbourhood seemed to have a mongrel, ours was called Paddy!
Dogs didn't seem as threatening then, no leads or anything, just happy to go wondering wherever and whenever...happy days

Nicolas,
Re the 1941 wedding photo - I recognise friends of my late mum and dad on it, Ralph & Lil Pratt and their two sons. In fact I am in touch with Colin Pratt who now lives in Germany.

Nicolas, I think the date could be right, or at least very close.
I will forward a copy to Colin for his comments.
Ralph and Lil are far left, with one son, the other son is far right - see matching coats!.
