Front row; ?, ?, Paul McCabe, Steve Platt, ?.

Words / phrases like "overlap", "Flat back four", "Diamond formation", "In the hole" (?).....etc etc hadn't (thankfully) been thought of then.

John Kelly saying run them into the ground. Just play them off the park.
Paul some of them lads played for the Bootle south.
Do you remember the outside five a side in the YMCA.
There where loads of teams playing football in them days and great times in town and in the pubs

Well Lily that's a fantastic picture do hope someone remembers them footballers names maybe granddad or great granddad

Hi Bob, I certainly do remember playing countless hours on that outdoor 5-a-side pitch @ Bootle YMCA when it was on Breeze Hill.

I would love to see any photos of that old imposing building........it wouldn't look out of place in a 'Harry Potter' movie or even 'Wuthering Heights' either.

I spent all my adolescent years going there & learnt all the Life Skills anyone could ever possibly need & met some amazing characters.

Really enjoy your 'Bootle JOC' link......you've dug up a treasure trove of great pics. Well done you.

Nothing beats the pub session after a hard fought Bootle JOC match & the "Inquest" starts........win or lose.......the abuse dished out would make people wonder; "Are they really friends ??"

Roberts was an amateur scoring sensation in the 1950s, setting a record for the Bootle JOC League of a staggering 137 goals in a single season for St Elizabeth’s in 1956.

That shattered a record set by Everton Colts’ Colin Vizard only five years earlier – and Johnnie was so proud of his tally the figure 137 is etched on his Mersey gravestone.

I was 6'1" in those days Bob and have more hair now than that fellah.

I mostly played number 9.
Lads I played with were Billy O'loughlin, John Collins, Kenny Rodgers, Brian & Dennis Fitzpatrick and if I recall it was 71/72.

The number 6 shirt was mine but never played that day, player is Kenny Dolce who was our goalkeeper who went on to become manager but as I was injured he played instead.
Just one thing how many brothers or cousins did A N Other have as he scored quite a few goals in the JOC.
Book on Bootle Villa will be done with a few stories of childhood and adult games.
Played my first game thanks to Bobby Hamilton for William Ross then transferred to Christ Church with John Boughey.

Fond memories of the JOC;.
The slopes and lakes of Orrell Playing Field
Washing in a cold water bucket
A pint before kick off (or maybe a couple)
A bit of a scrap with some hairy arsed defender who'd had more ale than me before kick off
Hot Oxo at half time.
Heading a water soaked leather casey
The move to Buckley Hill
An away game in Fazakerley (FPD)
A lot more ale after the game with the lads you'd just been fighting.
Taking the team kit home for me Mam to wash
Loved those days

i never had a hairy bum

we played F P D in the league cup final
the saturday before they beat us in the league
and kicked the hell out of us

they said dont turn up
we beat them 3 ,0 we must have met on the field KEN
played against the blessed sac

orrell pleasure was just impossible to play on

pitch 8 on buckley hill was our ground shared it with ford villa
in my later years i played for the stand park a great bunch of mates
my last game the league final cup
got beat by marsh lane team just cant remember there name

Bobhamo - sure we did Bob, The Stand Park was where several of our team would meet up the Saturday night. Always in the back lounge with the girls. They had no team then, nor did Cooksons.

Bob B - only recognise Billy Knowles, we got sent off for fighting , he was playing for Borthwicks then.

My name is alan davies.I played in bootle joc for a number of years.Clubs I played for included queens the alex with whom I won everton cup.I also played for the jollys and the beaky.The alex team included johnny king mick quirk tucker cliff bobby davies who was with blackpool as a young lad.davie tyrell and many others.We beat kirkdale who were favourites but we won .Our manager was Arthur mccumiskey and secretary was jimmy veitch.Played pentagon on the first pitch at buckley hill on first day it was open getting beat in the cup.What a side they had.Brian bromilow Frankie sadler eddie pino mickey german ray goodman to name a few of there players.Hope someone on this site remember the teams I have mentioned.Played sundays as well for sefton arms and the Chaucer in Crosby league.

Hello Bob, not much of a football fan I'm afraid, but do recognise a couple of the player's from above photo, "Owen Lee" lived around Marsh Lane, (was my friend's boyfriend for a short time, then emigrated soon after) a standing joke in our little circle! also, recognise "Collin McKeown" bottom row, think he lived off Malta Road, often used to see him around the local pubs during 60s and 70s, alway's the dapper!!
The photo before that, Waterloo United at Bootle Stadium, I was at that Match, couldn't believe it when they won, we were just getting ready to go home when the goals kept coming, and in final minutes too, my friend's brother "Bobby Thomlinson" was playing, I also remember another lad, a great player "John Conner" (Con) think that could be him centre of back row, also remember the lad "Tommy Price" he was alway's there to support, a bit like ourselves, they were a lovely gang, and what a time we had back at the pub that night, they were so chuffed, and had every right to be. Wish I could remember names of others, but such a long time ago... enjoyed the photo's though, happy memories!! Many thanks.

Great pic good set of lads. Last I seen of Colin Mckeown was in Benidorm he spends half the year there he has a flat above Mick the barber in Knowsley Road. Have a drink now and again with Owen Lees lad Owen. I've played against all them lads and with some of them Tucker managed us when I played for The Swinging Sporran
