Hi gang, you all appear to have a good archive of Bootle memorys & photo's.As a newby will you permit me to set you a wee test.
My maternal Grandpappy X 3 was know as "THE FATHER OF BOOTLE POLICE",his name was Duncan Mcrae, according to his police file he joined on 7th March 1840 & left on 5th November 1851. Prior to this it is believed he was in Chorley. Now I realise non of you youngsters would have known him but maybe just maybe one of you may have aquired some history of the Bootle Rozzers. I would really like to find out about him & the times he lived in,even better if a photo turned up in someones attic [I do'nt mind the dust or cobwebs ]
Thank's in anticipation for all or any info, I await a flood of E/Ms

Evening All! I am an ex-Bootle Rozzer and I write the books on Bootle. I live in Bootle, and have a small stock of my books for sale. if you live in the Bootle area I can deliver them, If not I can post them to you.
In my records I have come across a Photostat copy of a photograph of The "Father of Bootle" the late P.C.Duncan McRae.
He died in 1890 aged 98 years, He retired from County Police duty nearly 60 years ago. During his active police career, Mr. McRae had the sole charge of Bootle-there being only one Policeman at that time to cover the whole district.
There was a post on here some time ago about The Teapot Murders in Bootle, do you have any idea when these murders took place? it would put a few curiosities to rest.
I've just had a look for that thread. We now have over 4000 articles here to search through. Luckily the search tool top of our forum page found it quickly...

I hope Peter W can help us with this one, it has been racking my brain's for ages, I looked for Lyons Street and found that in census records, and it's new name was listed in 1911 Directory for Liverpool (can't recall the name now without looking at the directory) but it said in the directory, formerly Lyons Street.
Peter,
My late father was in the Bootle 'specials', do you have any information on the 'specials'?
There is a photo of him in uniform on this board somewhere.

Hi Jan, Beresford Street , on Derby Road.close to Millers Bridge, was I think formally called Lyons Street, Evidently it had a terrible `name` (reputation ) and the name was eventually changed, to Beresford Street, streets close by were Effingham Street, and Howe Street, where my father`s family came from . Hope I`m not doing Lyons Street, a dis-service, Recall reading something very recenly re:- `The history of the` Teapot Murders` Regards John
I would like to find out when these murders took place, perhaps the Bootle Times will have reports in them, but it would be painstaking looking through all the newspapers at Crosby library.
Thank's to all you kind folks who repsonded to my query, can I apologise for the delay in answering you all, apart from trying to get to grips with certain aspects of this infernal machine I have also been trying to catch up on a lot of other stuff after being on tour of Scotland for nearly 6 month. So once more thanks for everything.

I was reading the Annals of Liverpool in a directory I have for 1911, and it had this for 1887 The Newly organised Police Force at Bootle commenced their duties June 30th.
There are loads of other little snippets like that, it even lists who the Chief of Bootle Police was etc.
We have the same maternal grandad × 3
My mum's dad was also called Duncan mcrae and used to say that the father of bootle police uniform was on display at bootle Town Hall. I have tried to find things about him but it's very sparse. I read somewhere that Crosby library has information about him.
