When I was at Bootle Grammar we used to go to the Sqare and buy a crusty loaf and some chips then eat the inside of the loaf and put the chips in. God help us if we were caught eating chips outside of school

The modern looking building it is called The Feelgood Factory, incorporating on a single site organisations to assist in the healthy living and welfare of the community, funding is starting to dry up, as a result the creche and the healthy eating cafe closing. Not helpful if this continues, for the people now having to struggle as a result of the economic situation.
Vicki
The school has gone the last remnants were torn asunder last week. It took nearly 6 weeks to complete the task, my guess there was a level of Asbestos to remove first. This is a sequence of the demolition activity.

DAVEOWE - Sorry Dave, I missed your info re Feelgood Factory, what a shame these good endeavours struggle. We have the same issue in local community project here. Ken

Hi Ken
Do you mean the dentist that you had to go upstairs to.It had a big tooth hanging outside on chains(like a dentist on the Mexican border)Well it's moved to a big house on the main road near Sefton.
Take Care

Some pictures from Marian Gardens, which stand on the site of the old Bootle Grammar School for Boys
on the Marian Way, just behind the Marian Square. The Gardens were laid out in 1992.
Excellent work by Sefton Council Parks and Gardens department.
Inside the entrance gate at St Benet's Way/Sarah's Croft.
Toward Bridge Lane/Cyprian's Way/ Columban Close.
Toward Marian Way/ Netherton Moss School.
Toward the site of the old St Oswald's Church on St Oswald's Lane.

The original New Park Farmhouse is still standing, and they have done wonders with the old corpy yard.
A couple of years ago it was delapidated, and what I think may have been the barn was in danger falling down.
I've never walked around to see it from Bridge Lane, but the bit that can be seen from the park looks really good.
The single storey building that ran along Bridge Lane has been completely renovated. Looks much better than most new builds.
And, unlike a few places, they won't suffer any problems from increased container traffic in the future.

How come the flats above the shops on the right of the picture are boarded up ?
In this day and age of housing shortages, you think they would be snapped up, I lived over the road in Peterborough Drive, the square looks a bit down on its luck, all the big named shops have gone.
Regards
John

Hiya John, the first shop on the right used to be Tesco, the manger had the flat above, and a good looking daughter, when it first opened in the early 1960s.
Cheers Joe.

Big thanks for the list of shops in the Square, Bob.
I've tried visualising the shops loads of times and failed miserably.
Used to use Gould's Travel Agency (upstairs at the chemist's) to book the coach for Liverpool away games.
Was going to ask about the year, 'til I saw 1968 at the side.
Thanks again.

There were definitely tenants in the flats above the square, they gained access via a door situated in the corner between what used to be Vernons and Ethel Austins, just by the old statue. I Worked in Vernons for a while after leaving school and can vividly remember one of the occupants who used to pop down to the shops in his slippers.

Regarding your photographs of the old Grammar school site Dan, Sefton council could have so easily sold the land off to a housing developer for a considerable sum, should give them some credit for not doing so.
The park does look an extremely pleasant place, cannot think of any other parks in the Netherton area ?
Regards
John

John. the council did sell off about a fifth of the site for housing. I think Bellway was the developer, but it's a while ago now.
The photo below shows the old grammar site. The houses were built on the corner where the school buildings and playground stood.
Marian Park is basically on the site of the old grammar playing fields.

John, it was the council’s intention to build a similar sized development in the opposite corner of the grammar school site on Bridge Lane, where I live. This would have left a small strip of parkland running diagonally through the area. We formed a group and objected to the development on our side, we were allowed to speak at the council meeting and were very surprised when the plans were immediately changed in our favour. They said that they couldn’t guarantee it would never be built on but I think it would be harder to get permission now. That must have been around 1992.

Hi John,
While not as big as Marian Gardens, there a re a few others scattered around.
Killen Green Park on Church Way
Copy Farm Park (aka Marley's) on Copy Lane
The parkland adjacent to the Northern Perimeter Road
There's another near Dodge on Park Lane by Marina Crescent but unsure of its name (Abbeystead?) .

Born and raised in Romeo Street, later Lambeth Walk, Jersey Close, Garden Place, Hawthorne Rd, Gonville Rd now Netherton
